Extra-curricular traineeships (or training and orientation traineeships) must be communicated to Employment Centers. The mandatory reporting was introduced by the 2007 financial law and has to be fulfilled through the online procedure.

The duration of extracurricular (or training and orientation) traineeships cannot exceed six months including extensions.

The minimum duration of extracurricular (or training and orientation) traineeships must be 2 months.

The trainee has the right to suspend the traineeship for maternity and paternity leave pursuant to the legislation in force. This right is also provided in the event of an accident or long-term illness, i.e. those that extend for a duration equal to or greater than 30 calendar days per single event. The internship can also be suspended for periods of company closure lasting at least 15 consecutive calendar days. The suspension period is not considered in the total duration of the internship according to the maximum limits aforementioned.

The host company cannot carry out more than one extra-curricular internship (or training and orientation internship), with the same intern, without prejudice to the possibility of an extension limited to the maximum duration limit envisaged for this type of internship.

The commitment of the trainees to the host company must not exceed the time established by the national collective labor agreement of reference.

The internship can be interrupted by the host or by the promoter in the event of serious defaults by one of the parts involved or in the event of impossibility to achieve the training objectives of the project; the reasons for the interruption must result from a specific report.

The trainee must give motivated written communication to the tutor of the host company and to the tutor of the promoter, in case of interruption of the traineeship.

It is necessary for the company/trainee to send the INTERRUPTION form, (available in the Documents) at least one week before the interruption date, filled in, signed and scanned in pdf via email at the email address jobplacement.saa@unito.it, indicating as subject line: INTERRUPTION OF THE EXTRA-CURRICULAR INTERNSHIP of "name surname", by entering the counterpart's email address in cc.

Based on the provisions of article 1, paragraphs 34 - 36, of law no. 92 of 2012, the trainee is paid an indemnity for participating in the traineeship for an amount not less than 600 euros gross per month for a maximum commitment of 40 hours per week; this amount may decrease proportionally in relation to the trainee's commitment, up to a minimum of 300 euros gross for 20 hours per week. In any case, the parties involved have the right to agree on indemnities of a value higher than the above references.

The allowance is paid in full against a minimum participation in the internship of 70% on a monthly basis.

In the periods of suspension of the internship referred to art. 3 of Dgr 85-6277 of 22 December 2017, there is no obligation to pay the participation allowance.

From a fiscal point of view, the indemnity paid to the trainee is considered as income equivalent to that of employment (see art. 50, Presidential Decree no. 917/1986 TUIR). However, given that the participation in the traineeship cannot be considered as a job, such participation, as well as the perception of the allowance, do not entail the loss of the unemployment status possibly possessed by the trainee.

The host company:

  • must be in compliance with the workplace health and safety legislation pursuant to Legislative Decree no. 81 of 9 April 2008 and subsequent amendments and, specifically, undertakes to provide sufficient training and adequate training on the subject on the basis of the provisions in force at the beginning of the traineeship
  • must be in compliance with the legislation referred to in law no. 68 of 1999 and subsequent amendments
  • must not have extraordinary, ordinary or derogation lay-off procedures (CIG) in progress or use of the Wage Integration Fund or bilateral funds for income support, for tasks equivalent to those of the internship, in the same operating unit, unless there are agreements with trade union organizations that provide for this possibility. The host company that has "expansive" solidarity contracts in progress can activate traineeships.

Without prejudice to terminations for cause and for justified personal reason and without prejudice to specific union agreements, it is forbidden to host trainees for the performance of tasks equivalent to those for which the host company has carried out, in the same operating unit and in the previous 12 months:

  • termination for cause
  • collective dismissals
  • dismissal for exceeding the protected period;
  • dismissal for failure to pass the probationary period;
  • dismissal for end of contract;
  • termination of the apprenticeship relationship at the employer’s initiative, at the end of the training period.

Traineeships cannot be activated in the presence of bankruptcy procedures, unless agreements with trade union organizations have been signed with the aim to provide for this possibility.

N.B. It is necessary to interrupt the internship in the event of temporary lay-off in the sector in which the intern is hosted.

The internship can be renewed only once without prejudice to the maximum duration referred to art. 3 (6 months).

In case of renewal, the integration of the skills to be acquired in addition to those previously acquired must be indicated in the PFI (training program).

The company must send the EXTENSION form, (available in the Documents) at least one week before the start date of the extension, filled in, signed and scanned in pdf via email at the email address jobplacement.saa@unito.it and indicate in the subject line: EXTENSION EXTRA-CURRICULAR Internship of "name surname", with the email address of the trainee in cc.

It is not possible for a person to carry out more than one extra-curricular internship (or formative and orientation internship), for the same host company, even if he/she changes the professional profile of reference or the type of internship (first formative and orientation and then work placement/re-insertion or vice versa).

It is possible to repeat an internship for the same professional role, with a different host company, only if different activities can be included in the individual training project from those already acquired by the trainee in previous work and/or internship experiences and that contribute to the development of the employability.

The Host company is required to make the mandatory communications to the competent Body operating in the same area in which the internship office is located - through the Geco system (Online communication management system).

The data to be entered are those reported in the Training Project that we will deliver to the Trainee. If you need a copy in advance, you can request it by replying to the confirmation email.

For extracurricular (or training and orientation) internships activated by our University on the regional territory (Piedmont) it is not necessary to use the internship portal, as a cooperation has started for the transmission of the University internships data and Piedmont regional portal.

 A mandatory communication must also be sent in the event of an extension.
