Course objectives
The course proposes to offer the knowledge necessary to understand the structure and the working of the financial system, in particular the functions and the model of economic and operating behavior of financial institutions, the technical and economic characteristics of main financial instruments and the organizational models of the different financial markets.

Results of learning outcomes
Learning is aimed at understanding contents. Students should be able to solve exercises and problems. Learning should be "critical". The student should develop autonomy of judgment on the arguments studied and on the contemporary reality (watching financial news on TV and reading specialized financial press is recommended). Active class participation is important to demonstrate communication abilities. All these points will contribute to the final judgment.

The purpose is to provide an updated and operational view of the Italian financial system.

The assessment method consistes of a written exam.

- The financial structure of the economic system: financial assets and liabilities, circuits that allow to transfer funds.
- Why financial institutions exist: transaction and information costs, functions carried out by financial intermediaries.
- The main financial markets: the money, foreign exchange, bond and stock market.
- The main financial instruments: the technical and economic characteristics, the criteria of appraisal.
- The main financial institutions: banks, merchant and investment banks, securities brokers-dealers, asset management companies, insurance companies and pension funds.
- Bank balance sheet: analysis and performance.
- Banking regulation.
- Banking supervision.
- The international financial system.
